Cameron Co. park seeing increase in visitors ahead of fall camping season
Cameron County, PA (WJAC) — Visitors to Sinnemahoning State Park have been packing the park this summer despite high gas prices, lack of rain, lower water levels in the streams, and issues with the economy.
The park manager says the campground has been full and the park in general has been busy.
Space for camping this fall is filling up fast as people flock to our northern tier areas in October.
Delays loom in renovations of former Centre Crest nursing home
Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — More delays are looming in the plans to convert a former, county owned nursing home in Centre County into an office complex.
Officials say remnants of hazardous materials may still be on site.
The Centre Crest building in Bellefonte is more than 80 years old and, until a few years ago, was a county operated nursing home.
It’s now vacant and the county is looking to consolidate its offices, human services and other departments.
Gabby Douglas sparks controversy during USA national anthem
RIO DE JANIERO —Gabby Douglas was the center of criticism for Team USA as her posture during the playing of the national anthem drew heat from those on social media.
Douglas and her teammates had just received their gold medals in the women’s team all-around gymnastics competition when the national anthem began playing. Her teammates Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian and Laurien Hernandez all put their right hand over their heart as the anthem played, while Douglas stood in attention.
Huntingdon names next head football coach
HUNTINGDON -- The Huntingdon Bearcats have decided on a new direction for their football program.
Shane Thomas will take over, following in the footsteps of Michael Hudy who retired at the end of last season.
Thomas was an assistant on staff at Juniata Valley, and helped guide the Hornets to the state semifinal last year.

Westmont Hilltop holds auction at old elementary school building
WESTMONT, Pa. (WJAC) — The Westmont Hilltop School District held an auction Friday morning at the old elementary school building.
Superintendent Tom Mitchell says the purpose was to clear out the building and get rid of the items that aren't needed.
This included chairs, desks, mowers and kitchen equipment.
He says the building has been functioning at its minimum while the school district completed the transition to its current building.
Cambria County salon gives cancer, hair-loss patients confidence
RICHLAND TOWNSHIP - Losing your hair because of medical treatments can be traumatic, but a salon in Richland Township is helping people by pairing them with natural wigs.
Niccola’s Hair Salon started the program in January and has helped about 30 people since they started.
One of her clients is Connie Simmons. She recently started chemotherapy to help battle her cancer.
“My first thought was my family; my second thought was I'm going to lose my hair,” said Simmons.
Fishing licenses now on sale
HARRISBURG Pa (WJAC) — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced on Sunday that fishing licenses for the 2020 season are now on sale.
While most people wait until just before the beginning of the season, there are some advantages to purchasing a license early. "When you buy a fishing license now, you really get the most value for your dollar," said Amber Nabors, Director of the PFBC Bureau of Outreach, Education and Marketing.
Minnesota mother charged with murdering 2 children and setting home on fire
