Maui sues cell carriers over wildfire warning alerts that were never received

HONOLULU (AP) — Had emergency responders known about widespread cellphone outages during the height of last summer's deadly Maui wildfires, they would have used other methods to warn about the disaster, county officials said in a lawsuit. Alerts the county sent to cellphones warning people to immediately evacuate were never received, unbeknownst to the county, the lawsuit said. Maui officials failed to activate sirens that would have warned the entire population of the approaching flames.

Former MLB player Juan Encarnacion accused of sexually assaulting daughter

According to a report from ESPN, former Major League Baseball player Juan Encarnacion has been accused of sexually assaulting his daughter. Authorities with the attorney general's office in the Dominican Republic reportedly told ESPN that Encarnacion assaulted his daughter in May while she was sleeping. Investigators told reporters that Encarnacion has since been taken into custody and a preliminary hearing was held Saturday. Dominican law prohibits Encarnacion from being released on bail.

Penn State University police officers now equipped with body cams

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa (WJAC) — According to a university release, all Penn State police officers will now be equipped with body cams, beginning Monday, May 17th. Officials say this decision allows Penn State police to be more transparent and accountable, and also helps support safety for both the officers and the community. “This important step builds on our ongoing efforts to cultivate a more trusting relationship with community members,” said Charlie Noffsinger, associate vice president for Penn State University Police and Public Safety (UPPS).

Steelers linebacker Shazier ruled out for season with spine injury

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier was placed on the reserve/injured list Tuesday morning with a spinal injury he suffered while playing against the Cincinnati Bengals on Dec. 4. He will miss the rest of the season. Shazier underwent spinal stabilization surgery on Dec. 6 in Pittsburgh. The surgery was performed by UPMC neurosurgeons and Steelers team physicians Drs. David Okonkwo and Joseph Maroon. Theteam has provided no update on Shazier's condition or the severity of his spinal injury since the surgery.

West End Ambulance only station in county with specialty ambulance to carry obese patients

JOHNSTOWN - One ambulance center in Cambria County has a specialty piece of equipment no other station has, called Bariatric Transport. It's used to carry a patient who is overweight or obese. "It gives us the ability to move an obese person in a safe and dignified manner," said Ira Hart, director of West End Ambulance. The bariatric stretcher's purpose is to help transport patients in and out of their home to a hospital.
