Berlin man killed in crash involving coal truck on Glades Pike

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Officials in Somerset County say a Berlin man was killed Wednesday afternoon after his vehicle collided with a coal truck. Authorities say the crash occurred around 12:30 p.m., near the intersection of Glades Pike and Brotherton Road. The Somerset County coroner's office identified the driver of the vehicle as 90-year-old William Riley, of Berlin. Officials say an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine Riley's cause of death.

New medical marijuana dispensary opens in DuBois

DUBOIS, Pa. - Clearfield County's first medical marijuana dispensary opened its doors Monday in DuBois. Grassroots Cannabis, an Illinois-based medical cannabis company with licensed business operations in six states and growing, opened a new Herbology medical cannabis dispensary on South Brady Street. More than 40 patients stopped by the dispensary Monday. The company’s Herbology medical cannabis dispensaries serve patients with cannabis products, including flower, ingestible and topicals, cannabidiol (CBD) products, concentrates, oil vape cartridges and disposable vape pens.

Scranton Federation of Teachers begins strike

SCRANTON, Pa. (WOLF) — More than 800 teachers and paraprofessionals from the Scranton School District are now officially on strike. Hundreds of teachers joined the picket line today, outside of the Scranton School District administration building to demand a new contract. “Because the Scranton School Board and the central administration have decided to disrespect teachers and parents after five years without the collective bargaining agreement,” said Rosemary Boland, President of the Scranton Federation of Teachers.

Spikes sweep twin bill with Williamsport

Warren County prison escapee pleads guilty months after being recaptured

WARREN, Pa. (AP) — A homicide suspect who escaped from a northwestern Pennsylvania prison and was on the run for more than a week before a pet dog led to his recapture in July pleaded guilty on Thursday for the escape and to kidnapping a Pennsylvania couple. Michael Burham, 34, awaits sentencing in January. His defense lawyer declined comment after the hearing Thursday. He had been accused of kidnapping an older couple in Pennsylvania and driving them to South Carolina to evade a murder investigation in New York when he escaped from the Warren County jail, about 66 miles (105 kilometers) east of Erie.

49 graduate from Quehanna Boot Camp, learn self-discipline

KARTHAUS - A platoon of 43 men and 6 women graduated from the Quehanna Boot Camp Monday. The military-style program is voluntary and for inmates who have a certain kind of criminal record under 40-years-old. The boot camp gives inmates a chance to do six months instead of two years and finish the rest of their sentence on a guaranteed parole. Controversy surrounds last year's demolition of Conrad Building in Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — The historic Conrad building — which sat vacant for years in Johnstown — was demolished last summer. But Johnstown resident and former City Council member Charlene Stanton recently cited demolition dangers. "Everybody can shout, ‘hooray, the building is down,’ but regulations and laws should've been complied with, because it should've been a simple demolition,” she told 6 News. The City of Johnstown hired Steel Valley Contractors out of Youngstown, OH and CSI Construction out of Verona, PA for the $166,000 demolition.

Millheim Pool reopens; celebrating 50th anniversary of operations

CENTRE CO, Pa (WJAC) — The Millheim Pool, located at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park in Penns Valley, reopened this weekend after being closed last summer due to the pandemic. The pool is also celebrating its 50th anniversary of operations this year. Staff says the pool's reopening was delayed a few weeks due to equipment and supply issues. Pennsylvania senators push to end daylight saving time due to cost and health concerns

Some legislators in the Pennsylvania Senate are trying to put a stop to the practice of day light saving. Daylight saving time was first enacted as a legal requirement by the Uniform Time Act of 1966. Motivated by transportation improvements and arguments about energy saving– according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Since then, studies by the National Bureau of Economic Research have shown the opposite. We spoke with PA state senator Cris Dush (R-25) about senate resolution 65 which aims to make daylight saving time permanent.
