New PA law increases penalties for those with repeated DUIs

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Under a new Pennsylvania law, repeated D.U.I offenders now face stricter penalties. This past July, Act 59 of 2022 was signed into law changing the grading of certain offenses for those driving under the influence. The new law is also known as “Deana’s Law” – a woman who lost her life because of a drunk driver in 2019. An official WJAC spoke with says if these laws were implemented, Deana would still be here today.

Inmate at SCI Pine Grove convicted of assaulting Corrections Officer

INDIANA CO, Pa (WJAC) — According to a release from the Indiana County District Attorney's office, an inmate at SCI Pine Grove has been convicted of assaulting a corrections officer. Authorities say Jason Hinshaw was found guilty of felony aggravated assault for an incident that occurred on Feb. 6, 2020. Investigators say on the day of the incident, Hinshaw was found to be in possession of an electronic tablet and made threats against the corrections officer when confronted.

Man assaulted victim in shower prior to double shooting at Punxsutawney home

2nd UPDATE |Jefferson Co., PA (WJAC) — A police criminal complaint is providing new details about Monday night's double shooting at a residence in Punxsutawney Borough. Investigators say the suspect, 22-year-old Matthew Brotherton, allegedly broke into the Woodland Avenue home and assaulted the victim, a 27-year-old male, while he was showering. Police say Brotherton is then accused of firing multiple shots at the victim, striking him in the stomach and the right thigh.

Westmont Borough Council votes to amend sign ordinance

The Westmont Borough Council voted Tuesday night to amend their fencing and temporary signage ordinance thatcaused some controversy last August. They voted unanimously to allow five signs per residential property for a maximum of 30 days. Westmont Borough received backlash over the summer of 2022 when thePennsylvania A.C.L.U was contacted by residents who received violation notices for the signs in their yard. Borough council stated that the issue seemed to be over the question of political signs which are only allowed to be put up thirty days before an election per an ordinance put into place in the early 2000's.
