PA fire company disbands after racial slur allegations

DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — A volunteer fire company in Pennsylvania has disbanded months after it was suspended when another fire company allegedly heard members using racial slurs and disparaging Black residents in a virtual meeting. In a letter to Darby Township commissioners Wednesday, the Briarcliffe Fire Company announced it was shutting down. “The Briarcliffe Fire Company strongly denies that anyone in the township was ever treated differently or discriminated against based upon their race,” the company’s lawyer Robert Ewing wrote in the letter.

Penn State sorority loses recognition over alcohol violations

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Another Penn State Greek organization has lost its recognition. The Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority has lost its recognition until at least the spring semester of 2022 due to alcohol violations. University officials said the sorority's national headquarters conducted an investigation and decided to immediate close the Penn State chapter. Earlier this week, theZeta Psi fraternity was suspended for the same length after a hazing investigation. The Alpha Chi Omega sorority was suspended in March, also over hazing accusations.

Swords, bow found during drug raid in Cresson Borough

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Cambria County say two individuals are behind bars following a drug bust at a Cresson Borough apartment complex. Officials say on Tuesday, Cresson Borough police and the Cambria County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at the Keystone Ave. Apartments following an investigation into suspected drug activity. Authorities say the search led to the seizure of various drugs, including heroin, methamphetamine, Oxycodone and marijuana, as well as drug paraphernalia.

UPDATE |JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Last night’s landslide on a Johnstown-area hillside saw trees, utility poles and wires falling to the ground, forcing road closures. PennDOT was at the scene Wednesday night to get an initial assessment, but for an investigation into the cause and potential fix to the issues, the more it rains, the more we may have to wait. In February 2018, a landslide on a hillside beside Menoher Boulevard, after heavy rain, loosened the dirt, causing dirt, rocks and trees to fall down the hill.

Local elementary students help honor victims of 1889 Johnstown flood

Forest Hills Elementary School students partnered with rangers from the National Park Service's Johnstown Flood National Memorial Friday; each student in the school got a chance to help the rangers create luminaries that will be lit on the evening of May 31st to honor the lives lost in the 1889 Johnstown flood. The kids wrote the names of all 2,209 people whose lives were claimed by the waters on white paper bags, and then filled those bags with sand.

Officials ID teen who drowned while swimming at Raystown Lake

UPDATE:Huntingdon County, PA — The victim of Saturday's drowning in Huntingdon County has been identified by local school district leaders. Bellefonte Area High School Principal, Mike Fedisson, announcing that 16-year-old Nathan Dan was killed in a swimming accident at Raystown Lake. Fedisson says Dan was a student at the school, and was most recently in athletics, including on the school's lacrosse team. He says, "counseling services will be available for students and staff who may need assistance in coping with the loss.
