St. Francis comes up short in NEC championship game
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Robert Morris used a second half surge to defeat league-rival Saint Francis, 77-67, Tuesday night in the Northeast Conference tournament championship.
With the victory, the Colonials have qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015.
Dante Treacy, AJ Bramah, Josh Williams and Yannis Mendy all scored in double-figures as the top-seeded Colonials (20-14) extended a nine-point halftime lead to as much as 19 in the second half en route to a convincing win in front of an electric home crowd on Peoples Court at the UPMC Events Center.
Vietnam veteran receives honorary diploma at Altoona Area High School football game
A special ceremony took place during an Altoona Area High School football game this evening.
The Highschool’s football team, the Mt Lions, as well as staff and students honored veterans who served our country during the game. During half-time the school’s principal presented an honorary diploma to Vietnam veteran, George Swartz. Swartz left the high school in February of 1968 during his senior year to enlist in the U.S. army. He served in Vietnam and tells us that there is one person he really wished could have seen him get his diploma.
'Pandas' at zoo's exhibit turn out to be painted Chow Chow dogs
CHINA (WKRC) - Zoo patrons were left outraged after the pandas at an exhibit turned out to be painted Chow Chow dogs. The New York Post uploaded video of the "panda" exhibit to the publication's official YouTube channel. According to The Post, images of painted Chow Chow dogs at the Taizhou Zoo in China's Jiangsu Province have gone viral. The Taizhou Zoo's pandas were unveiled on May 1 and sparked outrage with many guests, who had come to see the beloved bears.
13-year-old boy charged with setting fire at Ligonier Beach
LIGONIER - A 13-year-old boy is being charged in juvenile court with setting fire to the snack bar area of a popular attraction in Westmoreland County.
The fire at the Ligonier Beach Restaurant, Lounge and Swimming Pool was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday and confined to a snack bar and bathhouse area.
Westmoreland County authorities aren't identifying the suspect because of his age, but say the boy rode his bicycle to the business before setting the fire.
2 more arrests announced in shooting that killed a Philadelphia police officer and wounded a second
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Two additional suspects have been arrested in connection with an airport parking garage shooting that killed a Philadelphia police officer and wounded another, authorities announced Wednesday.
Alexander Batista-Polanco, 21, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Hendrick Peña-Fernandez, 21, of Pennsauken, New Jersey, were arrested on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, First Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said at a news conference.
Police on Monday had said at least two other suspects were being sought as they announced the arrest of Yobranny Martinez Fernandez, 18, in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Altoona man found with weapons, explosive materials after shooting
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — Authorities in Blair County say an Altoona man is behind bars after he reportedly shot a woman following a domestic-related argument.
According to the affidavit, police were dispatched Monday evening to a residence along Logan Avenue, in Altoona, for reports of a woman with a gunshot wound to her toe.
Police say the male on scene, identified as 30-year-old Jordon Havlin, was reportedly "uncooperative" with officers and claimed that the woman had been shot by an unknown male who was "

Community honors fallen heroes with flags and stories at Patriot Park Foundation ceremony
Over one hundred community members gathered at the Camp Allegheny dining hall Sunday night to honor veterans who died in the global war on terrorism.
The Patriot Park Foundation hosted the event, which featured several veterans as speakers.
“We said that we would never forget. We’d never forget their efforts, we’d never forget their memories, we’d never forget that they were people just like us that came from all over the country,” says Pennsylvania 37th District Senator Devlin Robinson.
