NEW YORK (AP) — Less than three years ago, Mary Ann and David Giordano were taking turns lying on the living room floor with their Afghan hound Frankie, hand-feeding the desperately ill dog anything she would eat.
She had developed severe kidney problems after contracting Lyme disease, despite being on medications meant to repel the ticks that carry the bacteria that cause it. Veterinarians weren't sure she would survive.
Yet on Monday, Frankie was at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, healthy and ready to compete.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An acquaintance has been charged in the death of a Philadelphia journalist who went from sleeping on the street to working for the mayor to writing columns on the city's most pressing social issues.
Robert Edmond Davis, 19, faces murder, weapons counts and related charges in the death of Josh Kruger, 39, who was shot and killed at his Philadelphia home Oct. 2. A warrant had been issued for Davis four days later and authorities have said they have video of him in the area of Kruger's home before the shooting.

5-year-old girl hurt at county fair in Illinois dies, officials say
EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WICS/WCCU) — A five-year-old who was hurt at the Effingham County Fair in Illinois has died, according to officials.
The Effingham County coroner identified the child as Harper Finn. The coroner said the girl passed away at St. Louis Children's Hospital on Wednesday night.
While at the county fair Sunday afternoon, authorities said a horse-racing pace car driven by Jerry W. Young, of Jackson, Miss., hit Finn with an extended starting gate while passing the grandstand.
Centre Co. wildlife preserve to receive additional funding to improve handicap accessibility
Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A unique recreational area in Centre County is slated to get a new round of upgrades through a state funding grant.
The Soaring Eagle Wetland is termed a nature preserve. The 135 acres is located just off of Route 220, near the village of Julian.
One of the area's unique aspects is handicap accessibility, including a trail from the parking lot to a small landing along Bald Eagle Creek, for fishing.
Emergency Awareness Day event will raise money for Hollidaysburg ambulance service
MARTINSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — The Hollidaysburg American Legion Ambulance Service is holding its second annual Emergency Awareness Day this weekend.
The event features music, family friendly activities and several educational resources. It raises money for the purchase of new equipment that benefits the ambulance service.

State police attempting to locate Cambria County woman
PORTAGE – State police said Friday that they have found a missing 74-year-old woman from Cambria County in Maryland.
Police said they located Patricia Arpino Friday and she is safe.
Arpino was reported missing after she left her residence on the 1100 block of Cambria Street at 11 a.m. Thursday.
