Founder of popular Somerset Co. restaurant passes away

WINDBER, Pa. (WJAC) — Mildred Rizzo, founder of the popular Somerset County Italian restaurant Rizzo’s, died Tuesday morning, according to family members. Rizzo was the matriarch of the Rizzo family and founded the restaurant in 1965. She was inducted to the Greater Johnstown--Cambria County Business Hall of Fame in 2013. Local organization to pay over $100K after investigation into falsified volunteer hours

This week it was learned the Cambria County Area Agency on Aging agreed to pay more than $100,000 following a federal investigation and Representative Frank Burns is calling for greater transparency from the agency. Investigators with the U.S. Attorney's Office said they found the agency falsified volunteer hours that led to them being paid higher stipends. They said it was part of the AmeriCorps Foster Grandparent Program. Cambria County Solicitor Ronald Repak said the issue happened in 2016 and 2017, and that it's been completely resolved and shouldn't negatively impact the agency or county.

Recent Johnstown graduate remembered following tragic drowning at local hotel pool

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — The Greater Johnstown School District and community is remembering a teenager who tragically passed away following a drowning accident at a local hotel pool. According to Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees, 18-year-old Tahjmir Seeney was pronounced dead Tuesday morning in the Intensive Care Unit at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Officials say the accident happened Sunday, just before noon, at the Holiday Inn in downtown Johnstown.

Tyrone man, 18, accused of inappropriately touching 14-year-old girl

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Tyrone Police Department say a local 18-year-old is facing charges after he was accused of inappropriately touching a 14-year-old girl over the weekend. Police say on Friday night, they received a complaint that Derrick Little, 18, had sexually assaulted a female juvenile and that the assault was reportedly witnessed by two other teenagers. According to the affidavit, Little and the three teens had reportedly went to a friend's house in Tyrone on Friday evening.

Warden says Clearfield County Prothonotary attempting to draw him into public discussion

CLEARFIELD - The warden of the Clearfield County Jail said he has been drawn in to the dispute between Clearfield County judges and the county's prothonotary, Brian Spencer. In a letter to Spencer, Warden Greg Collins said that Spencer has drawn him into the discussion by not seeking requests from the warden by a "professional means," but by providing his letter to the warden in the media. The warden said he will not engage in the public discussion over the dispute.

2 dead, several hurt in bus rollover carrying students from New York high school

WAWAYANDA, N.Y. (TND) — A bus carrying 40 students and four adults from a New York high school was involved in a deadly rollover crash Thursday. State Police said the bus wrecked along Interstate 84 in Wawayanda just before 1:15 p.m., killing two people, including 43-year-old Gina Pellettiere, of Massapequa, and 77-year-old Beatrice Ferarri, of Farmingdale. At least five others were seriously hurt. They remain in critical condition. Their identities were not immediately known.

AASD officials confirm another COVID-19 case at Penn Lincoln Elementary

ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — According to Altoona Area School District officials, another student at the Penn Lincoln Elementary School has tested positive for COVID-19. In a letter penned to parents/guardians, Superintendent Dr. Charles Prijatelj said the district was notified by a parent on at the end of the school day on Friday, Oct. 2.
