Former elementary school building turned into nursing home, elderly rehab center

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — An old school has a new life. Conemaugh Valley Elementary School, located along Frankstown Road, has been turned into a nursing and hospice home called the Villa Crest. The remodeling was difficult, during which the hallways were gutted and the plumbing redone. According to the president, Dr. Richard Kastelic, the 50-acre area will be expanded in the future into a memory care facility with attached affordable living.

New coffee shop opening in downtown Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A new coffee shop called, "The Write Cup Coffee Shop" is coming to Gazebo Park in Johnstown soon. Denise Urban, the owner of "The Write Cup Coffee Shop" said, "I was itching to open another coffee shop." The name was inspired by Urban's love of writing, especially with typewriters. "I bought one typewriter, and I was hooked," Urban said. "I plan to have numerous typewriters around that you can look at, maybe one or two you can actually use, and of course we'll be selling the best coffee.

New report finds Social Security is set to run dry by 2035

WASHINGTON (TND) — Nearly 68 million Americans monthly are expected to receive a Social Security benefit, amounting to about $1.5 trillion in benefits paid during the year. The latest annual report from the Social Security Board of Trustees indicates that Social Security continues to grapple with "significant financing issues," and is on course to be insolvent by 2035. Since 2010, Social Security has been operating at a deficit, spending more money than it brings in.

3 men charged for patronizing prostitutes in State College, police say

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WJAC) — Three men are facing charges for allegedly paying for sex with prostitutes operating out of Centre County. Police say 38-year-old Travis Horner, 65-year-old Victor Shvenke, and 64-year-old Harold Geise have been charged after being stopped by police after visits to a Super Motel 8. The investigation stemmed from a human trafficking investigation in Brookville where police say they arrested a man who told them about Asian females staying at the Super 8 Motel on S.

Cambria County man accused of threatening to gun down officials and evading arrest

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — A Cambria County man is facing multiple charges, including felonies, after threatening to harm government officials and law enforcement officers, state police say. According to a criminal complaint, Brandon Shutty, 42, contacted Western Behavioral Health May 30 complaining that he was done with government and law enforcement, and made several references to "gun down" government officials and committing suicide. State police say Western Behavioral Health issued a 302 warrant for Shutty, saying he was "

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — In Centre County, the new year begins with new leadership for the county commissioners as one of its long-time chairmen is stepping down to take a position in state government. Tuesday felt like musical chairs at the Centre County commissioners meeting as Commissioner Mark Higgins moved into the chair position. Michael Pipe has held the chair position since 2016, but he will soon be leaving later this month to take a job as Deputy Chief of Staff for Public Safety in newly elected governor Josh Shapiro's administration.

Ligonier Twp. man accused of stabbing other man in face, stomach

Westmoreland County, PA — Authorities with the Westmoreland County District Attorney's office say a Ligonier Township man is behind bars after he allegedly stabbed another man in the face and stomach over the weekend. Investigators say on Sunday evening, police were called to a home along Green Valley Drive for reports of a stabbing. Police say the victim told officers that 46-year-old Michael Glass had allegedly attacked him and stabbed him in the face and stomach.

States eye mileage fees as gas taxes sputter

(TND) — California is recruiting drivers for a pilot program intended to address its gas tax shortage. California calls its mileage fee program Road Charge. Oregon calls its program OReGO. States across the country are looking for ways to supplement revenue used to build and maintain public roadways. Oregon was the first state to implement a kind of mileage tax in 2015. Participants there pay 2 cents for each mile they drive, and they have GPS or non-GPS tracking methods.

Tankers in New York freight train derailment were empty

AMSTERDAM, NY (WRGB ) — Authorities confirmed that the tankers being hauled on a freight train, that derailed in New York, were empty. Earlier in the day, authorities were concerned that the train was hauling residuals of fuel. Several tanker cars derailed Friday around 7:52 a.m. in Cranesville near Amsterdam, according authorities. No injuries were reported due to the wreckage. Montgomery County Undersheriff Carl J. Rust spoke following the crash.
