House Republicans target NPR in hearing over alleged bias, push to revoke federal funding
WASHINGTON (TND) — House Republicans continued a push to take away federal funds from National Public Radio after an op-ed written by an editor sparked a controversy over whether political favoritism was playing a factor in its coverage.
The Oversight and Investigations subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing on Wednesday focused on alleged biases in the public broadcaster’s coverage that did not include testimony from the editor whose claims sparked the backlash or anyone who is working at NPR.
Local high school has grand re-opening of shop named after Columbine shooting victim
Altoona Area High School held a grand re-opening Wednesday morning of an upcycling shop, named after a student killed in the Columbine High School shooting.
The project is called Rachel’s Closet, named after Rachel Scott, who was the first student killed in the shooting.
Madison Aboud with Rachel’s Closet says the project was inspired by Rachel’s wish to spread kindness and positivity.
Students can come to the shop for items such as clothing, school supplies and personal hygiene items free of charge.

Pittsburgh couple found with 177 empty stamp bags, police say
BROOKVILLE, Pa. - A Pittsburgh couple are facing more than 200 drug charges after police were called to a Brookville home on Long Avenue Tuesday.
Eric Zellonis, 34, and Candace Gill, 25, have both been charged with various counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and one count each of endangering a child.

VERONA, Italy (TND) — Pope Francis offered a message of reconciliation and compassion to all on Saturday as he led a series of dialogues at an Ancient Roman amphitheater in the Italian city of Verona. Speaking from the city made famous in the modern era by Shakespeare's plays -- "Two Gentlemen of Verona" and "Romeo and Juliet" -- Francis spoke "Arena of Peace – Justice and Peace Shall Embrace," a series of roundtables on a range of issues that have been central to his papacy like climate change, migration, economics and disarmament.
Beyond meals to additional food support
A Soup kitchens normally just provide a hot meal to the public, but one Cambria county food pantry is doing a little bit more than just that.
The St. Vincent De Paul family kitchen not only will provide a hot meal, but will give out extra canned goods and other food items they might have.
All of this while still promoting the local food pantries in the area.

Detective Kyle Gilmartin returns home to Scranton
SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A triumphant day in Scranton.
The city of Scranton welcomed home their very own Detective Kyle Gilmartin. It was an emotional return, with many from the community and beyond who came out to show support.
Outside the Scranton Police Headquarters, many filled the parking lot and lawn, waiting for the anticipated return of Detective Kyle Gilmartin, who many call a hero.
In early January, Gilmartin was shot twice in the head while in the of duty - when he and fellow officers were ambushed in a gang-related shooting.
New York City begins evicting some people in migrant shelters under stricter rules
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City stepped up its efforts to push migrants out of its overwhelmed shelters Wednesday as it began enforcing a new rule that limits some adult asylum-seekers to a month in the system before they have to find a bed on their own.
Migrants without young children must now move out of the hotels, tent complexes and other shelter facilities run by the city and find other housing after 30 days, unless they provide proof of “extenuating circumstances” and are granted an exemption.

PennDOT has announced temporary speed limit restrictions on I-80 due to the severity of the storm.
Officials said PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways: Interstate 80 between exit 97/DuBois-Brockway to exit 147/Snow ShoeInterstate 99 between the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 80Route 22 from State College to the Perry County line.
